A man was killed and a woman seriously injured late Saturday after the bike they were riding collided with a Sound Transit bus operated by Metro in the Chinatown International District. The woman was in serious condition Monday morning in Harborview’s intensive-care unit.
Both the victims were on the same bicycle; the man who died was found unconscious in the roadway and taken to Harborview, where he died.
The crash occurred at the corner of Fifth Avenue South and South Main Street at 10:40 p.m. Saturday, according to Seattle police. According to Sound Transit spokesman Geoff Patrick, the Route 554 Seattle-Issaquah bus was traveling southbound on Fifth Avenue South. The bike struck the center of the articulated, “accordion-style” bus.
The bus driver was cleared by a police-department drug-recognition expert and was not found to be intoxicated. A mechanical failure was ruled out, said police.
