A Multnomah County jury awarded a 57-year-old man $13.5 million after a garbage truck struck him and severed one of his legs in a downtown Portland crosswalk.
Scott Busch was crossing with the “walk” signal when an Allied Waste Services truck made an illegal right turn at about 6 a.m. on March 16, 2015, next to Macy’s at Southwest Morrison Street and Fifth Avenue. Busch had been making his way to his job at U.S. Bank.
Jurors also awarded Busch’s wife, Deanne Busch, $400,000 for loss of consortium.
The jury award gives Scott Busch about $3 million for medical and other expenses, plus $10.5 million for his pain and suffering.
The garbage truck’s driver, Eric McChesney, 44, pleaded no contest last September to two citations: failure to obey a traffic control device and careless driving. He was ordered to pay a $130 fine and perform 150 hours of community service related to driver safety, and lost his driver’s license for a year.
