KUOW Public Radio Reports that Seattle Traffic Deaths Haven’t Slowed Even with Fewer Cars on the Road

New data from 2020 has shown that in Seattle traffic deaths have remained steady despite being in a pandemic with fewer cars on the road. Seattle Times Traffic Lab Reporter Michelle Baruchman reported that 24 people died as a result of accidents on the road, most of which included pedestrians, but also comprised of bicyclists and motorcyclists.

While many may not view 24 deaths as a significant number, KUOW stressed in that article the fact that these are still human lives and loved ones of Seattle families. That number also lies just two under 2019’s reported deaths, the deadliest year for automobile collisions in the city. The Seattle Department of Transportation has given their explanation for the steady number of deaths during the pandemic, saying that less congestion on the road has contributed to faster and possibly more reckless driving, resulting in more fatalities.

Seattle’s numbers may be similar to other big cities, but this does not make our number of deaths acceptable. The city’s implementation of the Vision Zero program is only a start to decreasing traffic fatalities – their goal to eliminate these as well as serious injuries caused by automobile collisions by 2030. Even with additional safety measures made to intersections and speed limits, Seattle has a way to go in order to meet this Vision Zero goal and increase safety on the road.
