A report done by the national labor organization found that Amazon’s drivers who deliver packages nationwide are getting injured more than any other job within the company, and even more so than UPS drivers. Specifically, “Amazon’s contract delivery drivers got hurt at nearly double the rate of the company’s fulfillment center employees. Warehouse workers in delivery stations — smaller facilities built closer to population centers that enable one-day and same-day shipping — are also injured more often than fulfillment center workers.” According to this data and the Strategic Organizing Center’s health and safety director Eric Frumin, Amazon has become one of the top U.S. companies responsible for workplace injuries.
While this new data almost comes as no surprise with Amazon’s high-pace mentality in their warehouses and one-day shipping options, their little regard for worker safety is unacceptable. It was reported that “drivers in nearly a dozen states have sued Amazon and its contractors for pressuring them to work through legally mandated breaks” and that “oftentimes, drivers say, their workload is so heavy that they can’t pull over to relieve themselves.” It is both disappointing and frightening to hear reports of this kind, and it should not go unnoticed. Employers have a responsibility to provide a safe work environment for its employees, or to provide sufficient care and resources for those who are injured.
