2 Dead, 1 Injured After Street Racing Crash in Portland

On Saturday, February 10, 2024, a fatal car accident occurred in North Portland. The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) reported that two people died in a car that caught on fire during the accident and a driver in the other car was seriously injured.

Traffic investigators concluded in their review that there was alcohol involved and “street racing activity happening in the area.” There were around 25 street racers reported along North Marine Drive that night, most of whom took off before the police could investigate further, according to dispatch audio from Broadcastify.

GLP Attorneys sends our heartfelt condolences to those who lost friends and family members in this horrific car accident.

Street Racing Prevention in Oregon

North Marine Drive has been a popular street racing area for years. This motor vehicle accident was not an isolated incident. Due to the increase in car accidents in recent years, Portland was granted $100,000 dollars to invest in increased police presence along North Marine Drive.

Oregon legislators are also working to prevent street racing with stricter laws to discourage the dangerous activity. Last year, Governor Tina Kotek approved Senate Bill 615. This bill could sentence a street racer up to 364 days in jail and they can be charged a $6,250 fine. If someone becomes a repeat street racer offender within five years of their first sentence, they can end up in jail for five years and or receive a fine of up to $125,000.

These motor vehicle crashes are caused by negligence by the street racers. It is recommended to speak with a personal injury lawyer in Portland, Oregon if you have been involved in a car collision, including ones stemming from street races.
