What Steps Do I Take After a Car Accident?

Emergency preparedness allows us to think and process accidents before they happen. When we prepare for the worst-case scenario, we can better respond to the situation if it does occur.

Getting into a car accident can evoke many emotions, including fear and panic. It is important to stay calm and learn the steps to take after a car collision.

Drivers should review these essential steps to take after being involved in a car accident.

1. Check for Injuries

Your health and well-being are the main priority in any accident. If you or anyone in the vehicle are injured, call 9-1-1 for immediate help.

2. Stop Your Car and Move Out of Traffic

  • It is critical to pull your car over to the side of the road (if possible) when you get into a car accident. This allows you and the other driver of the vehicle to move out of the way of traffic.
  • If you are unable to move out of traffic, it is recommended to call a police officer to the scene of the accident to prevent further collisions.

3. Exchange Information and Document the Scene

When you get into a collision with another driver, it is important to exchange and take down contact information and document the scene. This allows you to provide as much detail as possible to the insurance company. The information you should take down includes:

  • name, phone number, driver license number, and address of the other driver
  • license plate number of the other driver
  • insurance details of the other driver
  • date and time of the car accident
  • collision details

4. Report the Car Collision to the Police

If there were bodily injuries or over $1,000 in property damage you are required to file a collision report in Washington State. When police officers investigate the scene of a car collision, they file the report on your behalf. However, if there are no officers involved, you must submit the report within four days of the car crash.

5. Contact a Personal Injury Lawyer

In the event of personal property damage and bodily injuries during a car collision, it is recommended to speak with a personal injury lawyer. You may be entitled to compensation, and a personal injury lawyer can help you file an insurance claim on your behalf.
