Washington Construction Worker Killed off Highway 520 after Being Pinned by an 11,000-pound Steel Beam

The Seattle Times reported on the death of a construction worker on June 2, 2021, who was working on the job of the Highway 520 Montlake Project when he was pinned between a huge beam and a semi-trailer flatbed. While other construction workers were able to free the man, he tragically died on the way to the hospital. It is unclear whether the incident was caused due to safety violations, but the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries has opened an investigation, which has up to six months to look into the cause. The article reports that this is the second death to happen while working on this project, the other occurring back in 2015 when a man’s safety-harness cable broke.

We are extremely saddened by this news and hope an investigation reveals more information. Construction is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, making it absolutely critical for employers and contractors to ensure a safe worksite with proper procedures in place. That being said, construction workers have many rights that protect them. The GLP Attorneys Construction Injuries practice area page lays out much of the details workers need to know about their rights.
