One Dead, Two Arrested After I-5 Crash Between Car and Motorcycle

In the early morning of Friday, August 16, 2024, a Bellingham man was arrested after a deadly car accident on the I-5 in Ferndale.

Collin Cayo, 20, was driving on the Portal Way onramp for I-5 southbound when he lost control of his 2005 Pontiac GTO, crashing into the onramp barrier, spinning, and coming to rest in the traffic lanes of the freeway. Evan Hayes, riding a motorcycle on the freeway, was unable to stop in time and collided with Cayo’s car, severely injuring him. Hayes later succumbed to his injuries. Three others who were passengers in the car were injured, and a fourth person in Cayo’s car fled the scene of the accident.

Authorities believe that the car accident was caused by drug or alcohol usage and are investigating. Cayo is now being held at the Whatcom County Jail as he awaits charges of vehicular homicide. Eric Damain Chavez-Garias who was a passenger in Cayo’s car was also arrested for an unrelated outstanding warrant.

GLP Attorneys sends its deepest condolences to the family of Evan Hayes and wishes everyone involved in the accident a speedy recovery.
