Illinois Nursing Home Administers Fatal Overdose

chairIn a tragic story out of South Holland, Illinois, the family of the late Dorothy Byrd has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the nursing home facility Holland House.

On February 3rd, 2015, a nurse allegedly sedated patients to lighten the workload and help compensate for the understaffed facility. According to an autopsy, Byrd died that next day due to toxic levels of sedatives. Byrd’s death was ruled a homicide.

Byrd was one of six patients rushed to the hospital after the alleged sedation. Although two other patients died about a month after the incident, Byrd is the only death determined to be caused by overdose. The two other patient’s died of natural causes.

While the nurse who administered the lethal doses and two nursing assistants have been fired, no criminal charges have been filed.
