In June, a 2-year-old toddler, Matteo Pacheco Elliott, was hospitalized after an incident at a daycare in Quincy, Washington. Matteo was playing in the yard when he was struck by a piece of lawn equipment that the daycare owner was using. This horrific incident resulted in Matteo being rushed to a Seattle hospital, where doctors were forced to amputate his foot.
The Quincy Police Department investigations concluded that there was not enough evidence to prosecute with criminal charges, however, in a different investigation led by the Department of Children, Youth, and Families, they found enough grounds to suspend the daycare’s license.
As investigations are ongoing, GLP Attorneys sends its deepest sympathies to the Elliott family and wishes Matteo a speedy recovery from the traumatic accident.
Daycare Premises Liability
Children have the right to be protected in daycares and parents should not have to worry about whether their child will be safe in the care of licensed professionals. According to the Washington Administrative Code 110-300-0165, an early learning center owner must make sure that all indoor and outdoor learning program spaces are free from hazards. Daycare owners have a responsibility to ensure that the children under their care are protected and in a safe environment.
