Richard Wiederhold was paralyzed from the chest down after a Domino’s delivery driver attempted to merge into his westbound lane. Wiederhold swerved to avoid a collision but his car flipped and hit a tree. He died from blood clots in his lungs 15 months later. He was a district fire chief in Brevard County and a former Winter Park firefighter.
An Orange County jury awarded more than $10 million in the wrongful-death case, holding the Michigan-based Domino’s Pizza parent company liable for the crash. Yvonne Wiederhold, Richard’s wife, will receive 90 percent of the $10 million verdict, about $9 million. The damages are for mental anguish, loss of companionship and pain and suffering. Domino’s had already agreed to pay for Richard’s medical expenses.
