June, July, and August are the most fatal months for driving in Washington State. Over those 90 days, more than 30% of all traffic-related deaths occur then. While these accidents occur from speeding, impairments, and distracted driving, they are preventable.
In an effort to reduce accident fatalities, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) have outlined four ways that drivers can take to remain safe on the road:
1. Plan Ahead Before Driving
Before you head out on the road, it is important to check for local traffic conditions. This is especially necessary if you are driving in new areas. By looking ahead at traffic and routes to take, you will have a better idea of what to expect on the road if you hit a traffic jam.
2. Be Aware of Vulnerable People on the Road
Pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists are all vulnerable people with whom we share the road with. This means that they are more likely to die from a fatality on the road than someone who is driving a car or truck. By staying hyper-vigilant of these road users, drivers can help prevent deadly accidents from occurring.
3. Focus on Driving Distraction-Free
As investigated by the WSP, 31% of accidents in the summer months were a result of an impaired driver. When you get behind the wheel, it is crucial that you are not impaired or distracted for your safety, that of your passengers, and that of others around you. It is also important to always buckle your seatbelt and follow posted speed limits.
4. Secure Belongings in the Vehicle
Securing your belongings in your car properly can ensure that drivers behind you do not have to worry about dangerous obstacles landing on the road. This is essential to do if you are heading on a long summer road trip where you may not be able to pull over as often.
These four safety recommendations by the WSP and WTSC can help keep you and others safe on the road and prevent fatal accidents from occurring. Unfortunately, even driving with due diligence, accidents can still occur. If you or a loved one are injured in a car or trucking accident, it is recommended to speak with an experienced personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.
