Boeing Safety Issues Continue With 50 Injuries, Engine Fire, Wheel Falling Off

Boeing faces increased scrutiny after the latest in a string of safety incidents, beginning with the 737 MAX crashes that claimed 346 lives and punctuated by the mid-air blowout of a door plug on a 737 MAX 9 on January 5, 2024. In the past week, a tire fell off a 777 departing San Francisco for Japan, a 737 engine caught fire on flight from Houston to Fort Myers, and most recently, on Monday, March 11, another mid-air incident that has resulted in at least 50 injuries, as reported by the Seattle Times.

Monday’s incident has been attributed to a “technical event” that caused “strong movement” during the flight from Sydney, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand. Passengers on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner reported that many passengers were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident, when the plane “dropped,” resulting in mostly minor injuries. It is likely that the incident will be investigated thoroughly in light of other recent safety incidents.
