Vessel Fire in Elliott Bay; Occupant Rescued and Ship Sinks

On Sunday afternoon, a vessel caught fire in Elliot Bay, Washington. The Seattle Fire Department, the Washington State Ferry Vessel Chimacum, and several Good Samaritan vessels responded promptly to assist. The vessel’s sole occupant, unable to stay aboard due to the intense flames, abandoned ship and was rescued by a nearby Good Samaritan. After being assessed by Emergency Medical Services, the individual declined further medical assistance.

The Seattle Fire Department’s fireboat “Chief Seattle” successfully extinguished the blaze and took the vessel in tow, before transferring the tow to Tow Boat US. While under tow, the vessel sank near the 32nd Avenue Beach Access in Elliott Bay. A containment boom has been deployed around the vessel, and divers have been contracted to remove any remaining fuel as a salvage plan is developed.
