Walking is a great way to get around, stay active, and enjoy your surroundings. But whether you are strolling through a neighborhood or navigating busy city streets, staying alert and aware is key to staying safe. While pedestrians often have the right of way, that doesn’t mean they are free from responsibility. Your safety starts with you.

The Washington State Department of Transportation provided the following practical tips to help you stay safe when you’re out on foot:

  1. Use sidewalks or walk facing traffic if none are available.
  2. Cross at marked crosswalks or intersections; don’t assume you are seen.
  3. Look left-right-left before crossing and stop at the curb.
  4. Be visible, use a flashlight at night, and wear bright clothing.
  5. Supervise children near roads, as they can't judge traffic well.
  6. Avoid walking impaired by alcohol, drugs, or medications.
  7. Obey all traffic signals and cross only when it's safe.
