How to File a Report if You Suspect Nursing Home Abuse in Oregon

If you suspect that a resident is being abused in a nursing home in Oregon, it’s important to take immediate action. Reporting suspected abuse is a crucial step to ensure the safety and well-being of the resident. In this post, we’ll walk you through the process outlined in ORS 441.645, which governs the reporting of abuse in nursing homes in Oregon.

What is ORS 441.645?

ORS 441.645 requires individuals to file an oral report if they suspect nursing home abuse. This report must be made immediately to the appropriate local authorities. Here’s what you need to know about making that report.

How to Make an Oral Report

An oral report must be made as soon as possible, either by phone or in person, to one of the following agencies:

  • The local office of the Area Agency on Aging
  • The Department of Human Services (DHS)
  • A law enforcement agency in the county where the report is being made

When filing a report, be sure to include as much relevant information as possible. This may include:

  • Resident’s name and address
  • Names and addresses of those responsible for the resident’s care
  • Details of the suspected abuse, including the nature and extent of the abuse, and any evidence of past abuse
  • Any explanation provided for the suspected abuse
  • Additional information that might help identify the cause of the abuse and the perpetrator

The sooner you report the situation, the quicker authorities can act to protect the vulnerable resident and hold any perpetrators accountable.
