In 2008, Washington State took a significant step toward protecting its youngest residents by enacting the Children’s Safe Products Act (CSPA). This legislation is designed to ensure that children’s products sold in the state are safe from hazardous substances.
CSPA’s Chemical Limits
CSPA specifically restricts the use of several priority toxic chemicals known to pose health risks to children. These include:
- Lead: A well-known neurotoxin that can cause developmental issues.
- Cadmium: A heavy metal linked to various health problems, including kidney damage and bone fragility.
- Phthalates: The law limits six types of phthalates, which are chemicals often used to soften plastics but can disrupt endocrine function.
- Flame Retardants: The CSPA restricts five types of these chemicals, commonly used in various consumer products, which may have harmful effects on health.
Reporting Requirements
Manufacturers of children’s products are required to disclose if their items contain any chemicals of high concern to children (CHCCs). This transparency allows consumers to make informed choices and encourages manufacturers to prioritize safety in their product designs.
