On July 17, 2024, two vehicles collided on State Route 9 in Whatcom County. The head-on accident occurred when a van heading south crossed the other lane and crashed into a car with two elderly Bellingham residents. Following the accident, the elderly couple was transferred to a hospital for their injuries. The driver of the van did not have any injuries, and it was reported that the cause of the crash was due to distracted driving.
