On Saturday, January 4th, a railroad bridge collapsed after a freight train attempted to cross over the Marys River in Corvallis. The incident was reported shortly after 12 p.m., prompting a response from both police and fire crews to the bridge near Avery Park.
A spokesperson for Portland & Western Railroad informed the Corvallis Gazette-Times that one of the derailed cars contained urea, a chemical used in fertilizers and skin care products. In response, authorities enlisted an ecological recovery team, who deployed floating barriers to contain and filter any potentially spilled substances.
While no injuries were reported, authorities are advising the public to stay clear of the area while the investigation is ongoing.
