Essential Safety Tips for Using Portable Generators and Preventing CO Poisoning

As winter weather sets in, snowstorms and power outages become more frequent, prompting many homeowners to consider purchasing a portable generator. While these devices can be lifesavers during power loss, they also pose significant safety risks. In fact, on average, 85 people in the U.S. die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning due to improper use of portable generators. To safely operate a portable generator and protect yourself and your loved ones, it’s crucial to follow essential safety guidelines.

What is Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly in high concentrations. CO poisoning can occur quickly and without warning, as symptoms like nausea, dizziness, and weakness may not appear until it’s too late. Victims may even lose consciousness before they realize something is wrong. In fact, CO poisoning can be fatal within minutes of exposure. This is why it’s often referred to as the “invisible killer.”

Essential Safety Tips for Using a Portable Generator

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) outlines specific safety guidelines when using a portable generator:

  • Never use a generator indoors. This includes places like homes, garages, basements, crawlspaces, or sheds. Even if you open doors and windows, it won’t provide enough ventilation to prevent deadly levels of CO from building up.
  • Operate the generator outdoors only. Place your generator at least 20 feet away from your house and other buildings, ensuring that the exhaust is directed away from any living areas. Keep windows and doors closed in the exhaust path, as CO can seep inside.
  • Avoid using generators in confined spaces. Do not place the generator on a porch, in a carport, or near any area where someone might enter, as these spaces are too close to the home and can trap CO.
  • Maintain your generator properly. Always check that your generator is in good working condition. Be sure to read and follow the safety labels, instructions, and warnings in the owner’s manual to ensure safe operation.
  • Consider a generator with CO shut-off technology. Look for models equipped with a built-in CO shut-off feature, which automatically turns off the generator when dangerously high levels of CO are detected.

By following these safety measures, you can reduce the risk of CO poisoning and use your portable generator safely, ensuring that you and your family stay protected during power outages.
