A Motorcyclist’s Responsibilities and Risk Management In Oregon

Riding a motorcycle is a thrilling way to explore Oregon’s beautiful roads, but it also comes with unique risks and responsibilities. Whether you are an experienced rider or just starting, understanding your duties and how to manage risks effectively is key to staying safe and in control on the road. The Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) provides the following guidelines to help ensure your safety.

Rider Responsibilities

  • Get the Right License: Ensure you have a motorcycle endorsement or permit to legally ride.
  • Follow Road Laws: Abide by traffic laws just like any other vehicle.
  • Share the Road: Be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists, and larger vehicles.
  • Ride Sober: Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Wear Protective Gear: Helmets, jackets, gloves, and boots are essential for your safety.
  • Increase Visibility: Motorcycles are harder to see, so use your lights and wear reflective gear.

Risk Management: SIPDE

Experienced riders use SIPDE, a strategy to manage risk:

  • Scan: Continuously look ahead, behind, and to the sides for hazards.
  • Identify: Spot potential risks, like other vehicles or road obstacles.
  • Predict: Anticipate what those hazards might do next.
  • Decide: Choose the best action—slow down, change lanes, etc.
  • Execute: Carry out your decision and communicate with lights or horn.

Motorcycling is thrilling, but it requires responsibility and awareness. Follow the rules, wear protective gear, and use strategies like SIPDE to manage risks and stay safe.
